RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using reconnaissance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of entry passages leading to the depot... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of numerous UK service members stationed over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, shows how British military are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the US military conducted what it described as a "major assault" on Daesh sites in the country, after an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
