The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
