As bewildering as it is to witness the chief executive attempt to overturn the established notion of democracy and exchange it with its direct contrary, there exists a significant segment of Americans who wouldn't consider it completely novel. That is those of us – within elder demographics close to half – who were educated within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have witnessed over the years as politically conservative religious groups transformed the Christ we were raised with into the total contrary of our understanding of him. At its most basic, they converted a persona of compassion into a symbol of animosity who endorses specifically the brutality that he condemned in biblical teachings; this transformation occurred more slowly, across decades as opposed to months, yet it remains unsettling in the same ways, a confusing personal impact for many of us.
A Harmful Christianity Establishes Itself
So let me first describe the Savior from my upbringing, since in theory Christ is the focus within Christian belief, and since the rapidly expanding group of Americans might have little sense of him since they are skeptics or agnostics or nones. I raise no objection with these various perspectives, nor with any other faith; yet I maintain that exist valuable insights of great price in the Christian story.
It is unquestionably definitely not the narrative of an authoritative monarch appearing; rather, an infant arrives to displaced parents in a garage, who must quickly flee to a foreign land to evade covert authorities. The child matures in modest conditions, an employed craftsman; his doctrine concerns compassion for fellow humans, especially for the disadvantaged – not merely emotional affection, but practical compassion, shown by providing food and protecting. The Savior's reaction to hostility is to offer the additional cheek – not as a gesture of submissive tolerance, but as a way to educate the assailant; his approach to wrongdoing indicates that whenever a person pilfers your jacket you ought to provide them your pullover too.
The evident and straightforward fact that the Savior of the gospels advocates for a type of radical love centered on the poor has perpetually caused Christian religion rather a scandalous religion: appealing to the general public, but owing to its natural unconventionality requiring to be controlled.
